Today (26 january 2014) is the 65th Republic day of India. It is easily the most important red letter day in the annals of independent India because India became a democratic republic on this day. Considering the old habits the Indians were used to for thousands of years, this was a new concept for Indians and many Indians have not fully reconciled to this concept even today, but this concept has paved the way for a nation where all Indians , irrespective of their backgrounds were guaranteed equality- something which was not guaranteed to them before 26 january 1950. Republic day also stresses the fact that India represents unity in diversity and that Indians, for all their diverse backgrounds can live and work with their fellow countrymen in harmony.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Aakraman” (1975). This song is a stage dance song. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey and chorus. the song is piucturised on Rekha, Ashok Kumar, Sundar, Aruna (Marathi dancer) etc. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.
I take this opportunity to wish a happy Republic day to one and all.

On the occasion of the 63rd republic day of India (26th january 2012), we are discussing a few patriotic songs today.
Here is a song of this genre from “Aakraman” (1975). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and it is picturised on Rajesh Khanna, who plays a handicapped person who has lost one leg and is forced to walk with the help of crutches. He sings this patriotic songs to encourage the Armymen who are proceeding to the battlefield. The picturisation also shows Sanjeev Kumar and several others play fauzi jawaans in this song.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist of this song and the music of this song is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
I have provided the audio as well as the video of this song.
I take this opportunity to greet all Indians, whereever they are, a very happy 63rd Republic day.

Today (13 october 2015) is the death anniversary of Kishore Kumar (4 august 1929- 13 october 1987). Kishore Kumar wanted to be a playback singer, but he found himself getting signed up as an actor. Though he acted in lots of movies and made his mark in that role as well, his heart was in singing. But he could only sing for himself and Dev Anand.

Kishore Kumar waited for two decades. His career was going nowhere. Just when it appeared that it was the end of the road for him that the big breakthrough came for him. His songs in “Padosan”(1968), followed by “Aradhana”(1969) catapulted him to the very tin that op among male playback singers and the existing hierchy of male playback singers got thrown out of the proverbial window.
Kishore Kumar grabbed his opportunities with both hands and stayed at the top for the next 17 years till his death in 1987 on this day.
As a tribute of Kishore Kumar, here is a song from “Aakraman”(1975). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Only the audio of this song appears to be available as of now. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Chhoti umar mein lambe safar mein (Aakraman)(1975) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
chhoti umar mein
lambe safar mein
yoon humsafar se
jeda munh mode ae
beimaan hove ae ae

chhoti umar mein
lambe safar mein
yoon humsafar se
jeda munh mode
jeda munh mode beimaan hove ae
chhoti umar mein
lambe safar mein
yoon humsafar se
jeda munh mode
jeda munh mode
o beimaan hove ae
chhoti umar mein
lambe safar mein
un humsafar se ho ho

ab gusse se kaam na lena
bedardi ka naam na lena
ab gusse se kaam na lena
bedardi ka naam na lena
sar pe ye ilzaam na lena aa aa
haaye aisi rut mein
kaise kisi ka jeda dil tode
jeda dil tode
beimaan hove ae
chhoti umar mein
lambe safar mein
yoon humsafar se
ho ho

ye badmast(?) haseen nazaare ae
karte hain ham tum ko ishaare ae
ye badmast(?) haseen nazaare
karte hain ham tum ko ishaare
kehte hain leke naam hamaare ae ae
manzil se pehle
apne saathi ka
jeda sang chhode
jeda sang chhode
o beimaan howe ae
chhoti umar mein
lambe safar mein
yoon humsafar se
jeda munh mode
ho jeda munh mode
beimaan hove ae
chhoti umar mein

Rut jawaan jawaan raat meharbaan

“Aakhri Khat” (1966) has the distinction of being Rajesh Khanna’s debut movie. It was truly a different kind of a movie, not the usual mainstream Bollywood movie.

This song from this movie “rut jawaan jawaan raat meharbaan” is very much a trivia buff’s delight. This song is a party song/ club song. It is sung by Bhupinder Singh and it is picturised on him as well. The song shows him holding a guitar and singing this song.
Bhupinder Singh, who made his singing debut a couple of years ago in “Haqeeqat” (1964) was not only a good singer but a good guitar player too. So he is not holding the guitar just for show. He could also play guitar very well. In fact, Bhupinder Singh was the guitarist for S D and R D Burman in some of their very well known songs viz “Hothon pe aisi baat” (Jewel Thief), “Dum maaro dum” (Hare Rama Hare Krishna), “Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko” (Yaadon ki baraat) and “Mehbooba Mehbooba” (Sholay) etc.
This picturisation also shows a portly man playing trumpet. He is the legendary trumpet player viz chic chocolate. He was the assistant of C Ramchandra and many memorable C Ramchandra numbers (viz “aana meri jaan sunday ke sunday”, “mere piya gaye Rangoon” etc) were created by him.
Coming to this song, it is written by Kaifi Azmi and the music is composed by Khayyam.

Song-Rut jawaan jawaan raat meharbaan (Aakhri Khat) (1966) Singer-Bhupinder Singh, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Khayyam
Lyrics
rut jawaan jawaan
raat meharbaan
chhedo koyi daastaan
rut jawaan jawaan
raat meharbaan
chhedo koyi daastaan
rut jawaan jawaan

kuchh jhuki jhuki nazar kahe
kuchh chhupa chhupa sa dar kahe
jo kahe wo raat bhar kahe
phir bhi na ho kuchh bayaan
rut jawaan jawaan
raat meharbaan
chhedo koyi daastaan
rut jawaan jawaan

husn ki shikaayaten bazaa
hai idhar tadap udhar gilaa
khaamoshi hai dard ki sadaa
aankhen banin hain zubaan
rut jawaan jawaan
raat meharbaan
chhedo koyi daastaan
rut jawaan jawaan

gham khushi khushi chhupa liyaa
dard ko bhi dil banaa liyaa
zindagi ne aazmaa liyaa
tum to na lo imtehaan
rut jawaan jawaan
raat meharbaan
chhedo koyi daastaan
rut jawaan jawaan

Mere chandaa mere nanhe

Posted on: May 16, 2011

When one watches a movie which is particularly powerful and deals with human suffering, I for one cannot bear to watch it. Forget watching such movies, I find myself unable to watch the relevant songs from such movies as well.

I became aware of the story of “Aakhri Khat” (1966) thanks to its review in Memsaab’s story blog. There is this small kid less than two years old, who is separated from his mother (who has died) and is without a shelter.Rajesh Khanna, the father, is desperately searching for the kid. How one’s heart will not melt at such a scenario. No wonder I have never been able to think of watching this movie.
This sad melancholic song, where Indrani Mukherji, the mother pines for her missing child, is sung by Lata at her heart rendingly best. Kaifi Azmi’s lyrics very eloquently express the feelings of a mother whose child has gone missing. Khayyam has composed the music.

Song-Mere chanda mere nanhe (Aakhri Khat) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Khayyam
Lyrics
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

mere chandaa
mere nanhe
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

chhup gaye laadle aanchalon mein
raat pariyon kaa paighaam laayi
aa aa aa
chhup gaye laadle aanchalon mein
raat pariyon kaa paighaam laayi
kis tarah so gayaa tu akelaa
kis tarah bin mere neend aayi
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

tere sapne mein aa to gayi main
apni majbooriyaan kyaa bataaun
aa aa aa aa
tere sapne mein aa to gayi main
apni majbooriyaan kyaa bataaun
boond bhi tan mein baaqi nahin hai
bhookh teri main kaise mitaaun
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

aadmi bhi hai Bhagwaan bhi hai
phir bhi phirtaa hai tu besahaaraa
kaun tujh ko gale se lagaaye
pattharon kaa hai ye shahar saaraa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

door jaanaa hai nanhe musaafir
raaste mein kahin thhak na jaanaa
aa aa aa aa
door jaanaa hai nanhe musaafir
raaste mein kahin thak na jaanaa
thaam ke meri aahon ki dori
dhoondh le tu hi apnaa thikaanaa
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun

Hai kuchh bhi nahin o my darling

Posted on: May 22, 2011

Rajesh Khanna made his acting debut with “Aakhri Khat” (1966). and what a fine debut it was too ! The movie is a critically acclaimed movie and it has the ability to movie common movie watchers. In fact, the movie can move the movie goers so much that many of the more sensitive ones (like yours truly) cannot bear to watch the movie.

The movie watchers may be sensitive, but the same cannot be said about the VCD makers of movies. This movie had five nice songs in it, but the latest VCD marketed by the VCD company has one of the songs missing from it, thus shortchanging the paying public with impunity.
I have discussed four songs from this movie. Here is the remaining (and missing) song from the movie. Only the audio of the song is available and it is sung by Manna Dey and chorus. from the sounds of it, the song is apparently picturised as a party song. I am of course guessing it.
Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Khayyam.

I had heard this song as a child, but I never came to know what movie this song was from- till a few days ago.

Now I know that this Lata song was from a movie called “Aakhri Khat”(1967). And what a beautiful song it is. Written by Kaifi Azmi and composed by Khayyam, it is a song that tugs at the heart strings of the listeners be they young or old. And I loved this song when I first listened to it as a pre teen kid.
The song is picturised on an unbelivably young looking Rajesh Khanna and on Indrani Mukherjee.
